Artist Statement
I started off in college not knowing what I wanted to do. I ended up taking a class in a field I thought I wanted to pursue, Literature. During my last year, a friend of mine suggested I take a couple of classes in surface design and weaving. I took a great liking to these and with the guidance of the instructor ended up becoming a good weaver and surface designer. The next year I went back to school to for Fiber and Fabric Art.
While at school I got a job working with the Developmentally Disabled population, it was here I became interested in Autism and how art could help those effected by it. I created a box that incorporated shapes, colors, and touch. (I have yet to see if it will benefit those with Autism but also learned it will benefit those with Downs Syndrome learn shapes and colors).
I did my college internship at a Residential Treatment Program for those with mental illness and substance abuse in Vermont. I helped them start a fiber program. I created various dye colors using the three basic colors of red, blue, and yellow using Kiton Acid Dyes.
While I like creating to help others, I also like finding ways to challenge art. I recently wove a blanket using duck tape and backed it with fleece so I could use it as a functional blanket. I am also not afraid to use color when I am creating art.
